Brihadevar Temple is a very ancient temple. This temple was built in the beginning of the 11th century. Brihadevar Temple is a Hindu ancient temple located in Tanjore of Tamilnadu. इस बृहदेश्वर मन्दिर कला की प्रत्येक वास्तुकला, बहुत ही अद्भुत है क्योंकि इस मन्दिर पर चित्रांकन, नृत्य, संगीत, आभूषण एवं उत्कीर्णकला का भंडार है। यह मंदिर भारत की उत्कीर्ण संस्कृत व तमिल पुरालेख सुलेखों का उत्कृष्ट उदाहरण है। इस प्राचीन मंदिर के निर्माण की कला की एक बहुत ही मुख्य विशेषता यह है कि इस मन्दिर में बने इसके गुंबद की परछाई पृथ्वी पर नहीं पड़ती। शिखर पर स्वर्णकलश स्थित है। जिस पाषाण पर यह कलश स्थित है, अनुमानत: उसका भार 2200 मन (80 टन) है और यह एक ही पाषाण से बना है। मंदिर में स्थापित प्राचीन विशाल, भव्य शिवलिंग को देखने पर उनका बृहदेश्वर नाम सर्वथा उपयुक्त प्रतीत होता है।

वैसे तो इस मंदिर के बाहर की सभी दीवारों पर बहुत सी सूंदर-सूंदर मूर्तियाँ देखने को मिल जाएंगी। मंदिर के अन्दर त्रिनेत्री (तीन आँखों वाले) वाली भगवान शिव की एक विशाल मूर्ति स्थापित है। भगवान शिव की इस मूर्ति में भगवान शिव की तीसरी आंख बंद दर्शायी गई है। मंदिर के पूरे परिसर में 250 लिंगगण (भगवान शिव के प्रतिनिधि) हैं। भगवान शिव द्वारा किए गए 108 नृत्य, जिन्हें “कर्म” के रूप में जाना जाता है, मंदिर के पवित्र स्थल की आंतरिक दीवारों पर मूर्ति के रूप में बनाए गए हैं।
